Water is essential – integral to the function of every organ. Getting enough should be the first step in treating your skin from within; there is literally no way for the skin to glow without proper hydration. When you don’t take in enough water, your blood draws water from the skin cells, leading to a dull and lifeless complexion. This dehydration makes the skin less elastic and less able to defend itself, making it more prone to wrinkling over time.
I often deal with dehydrated skin in my work-dry lips and a flaky surface are a giveaway. People always say how they find water boring and so opt for sugary drinks or coffee. This not only ages the skin by killing collagen, but it triggers blood-sugar and doesn’t rehydrate.
INFUSIONS
If you’re not keen on pure water, the adding flavorsome extras makes a great alternative.
CUCUMBER AND MINT
Cut Half a cucumber into slices and place in a pitcher. Squeeze the juice of a lemon into the pitcher, then slice up a second lemon and throw it in, too. Add a few sprigs of mint and pour water over. Add some ice and serve.
HERBAL
Place 1 teaspoonful of dried herbs into a teapot and add boiling water. Leave to stand for 10 minutes before straining or transfer to apitcher and add ice. Always use good quality herbs, preferably organic, from a health-food store. If using fresh herbs, finely chop and use 2 teaspoons per pot.
